Local panel to oversee Peoples Charter Process
Jan 17, 2008, 14:18
The inaugural meeting of the National Council for Building a Better Fiji (NCBBF) met yesterday and came up with a communiqué that shows the direction that the Council will take in order to formulate the draft People’s Charter for Change, Peace and Progress.
One of the issues addressed in the statement is the consideration given to an independent panel drawn from the international community whose role is to oversee the proposed Charter process.
According to the Head of the Technical Support Secretariat (TASS) Mr John Samy a number of individuals from Australia, Malaysia and South Africa have been considered but no one has been appointed as yet.
The NCBBF endorsed the proposal that in the absence of such support from the international community, that a local panel of eminent persons be established to independently oversee the process.
However, appeals will be made by the Council for international development partners to extend financial and technical support for this very important national initiative
