Dismac calls for caution

The National Disaster Management Office has called on the people living near low lying areas to pay heed to the warning by the Fiji Meteorological Service.
The advice comes in the heels of a warning by the weather office of possible flash floods for those that residing near river banks and low lying areas.
DISMAC Director, Mr Joeli Cawaki, said the weather bulletin from the National Weather Forecasting Centre, Nadi, showed that a “trough of low pressure over the southern parts of Fiji is moving slowly northwards across the group”.
“It is expected to lie over the northern parts of Fiji by Sunday. Associated active cloud bands affect the country,” he said.
Mr Cawaki said the advice for the public was to take necessary precautionary measures during the current unfavourable weather.
“It is advisable that members of the general public residing close to creeks and rivers take heed of the flood advice in order to avoid loss of lives and property,” he said.
A strong wind warning remains in force for South West Viti Levu, Kadavu passage, Vatu-i-ra passage, Koro Sea and Southern Lau.
And forecasts for Fiji waters tommorrow is North-westerly winds for up to 20-25 knots.
“As for the mariners who travel on small outboard motor should take precaution of the strong wind warning and avoid venturing into sea to avoid loss of lives,” Mr Cawaki said.
He also highlighted the importance of keeping a few key factors and plans in mind during such adversities with particular emphasis on evacuation.
