Rotarians yesterday got a glimpse of the life inside the prison walls and have shown keen interest in assisting in the rehabilitation programmes.
Rotary Club of Suva President, Suva lawyer Hamendra Nagin, said the tour of the Korovou Prison was good experience for the members as it gave them an insight into what sort of assistance was required.
Prisons Commissioner Brigadier Iowane Naivalarua told the Rotarians that the priority area for the department was the re-integration of prisoners so as decrease recidivism.
Mr Nagin said there were a number of areas where they saw a need for assistance but especially so in the area of rehab.
“What we saw was that there was a need for materials for rehabilitation so assistance from the club could come in the form of computers, books and other requirements.”
“What we have done is, we have gone and assessed the situation and now the members will meet again to decide on what sort of assistance we can provide,” Mr Nagin said.
He said the clubs efforts to assist could be boosted by assistance from its sister clubs overseas.
“If, say we decided to pledge $10,000 then the actual amount could be three times that amount after our overseas sister clubs decide to join us,” Mr Nagin explained.
The Suva Rotary Club, which has 60 members, is well known for its philanthropic efforts for the disadvantaged.
Mr Nagin said the club had wanted to visit the Naboro Prison and although the plan had not fallen through, the tour to Korovou was equally enlightening.
Brigadier Naivalarua said there were numerous efforts to educate the prisoners so that they can lead a meaningful life after completing their term.
He also thanked the Rotarian for their interest and reminded them that prisoners deserved to be treated like humans.
