Municipal councils around the country are expected to undergo major reforms to increase the level of transparency and accountability and improve the services provided to ratepayers and members of the public.
Minister for Labour, Industrial Relations, Employment, Local Government, Urban Development and Housing Lekh Ram Vayeshnoi says the reforms have been long overdue and that ratepayers and members of the public deserve improved services that are provided in a transparent manner.
“Municipal councils should also be held accountable for their decisions,” he said.
Mr Vayeshnoi said as a first step, the Ministry of Local Government is scrutinizing the work of the municipal councils.
“My Ministry is closely monitoring all aspects of operations of all the councils with the hope of improving the conduct of business. The ultimate goal is to look at business improvement processes and to ensure accountability, transparency and service delivery in all councils throughout the country,” he said.
It is expected that recommendations from the observations will be put together in a roadmap that the municipal councils will implement.
