The Fiji Sugar Corporation might not be able to meet the first quota under the billion-dollar export deal with the European Union if cane supply problems continue. FSC acting chief executive Deo Saran said the corporation could end up forking out more money if the required tonnage was not available when the shipment is due. He pleaded with growers throughout the country to improve and stabilise supply so the industry could meet its first shipment schedule for this month. (FT)

Amalgamated Telecom Holdings Limited has made a group record net profit of $46.1million for the year ending March 2008, it said yesterday. It follows an increase of consolidated sales revenue by $12.2 million, it said. ATH said this year's accounts were prepared under the new International Financial Reporting Standards. ATH Group includes companies like ATH, Telecom Fiji Limited, Vodafone Fiji Limited and ATH Technology Park Limited. (FT)

The Department of Information is in the process of advising the proper authorities regarding visa for a group of overseas journalists intending to visit next month. Acting deputy secretary Major Neumi Leweni said he had spoken to ABC's director international relations, Murray Greenz, about the reasons for the group's trip. "We've spoken to the Mr Greenz and we've relooked at the reasons for the trip," said Major Leweni. "We are in the process of advising proper authorities regarding the granting of their visa." He said he had a discussion with Mr Greenz late last week and there was a possibility of the group's visa being granted. Major Leweni said the visa for the group were not granted at first because the purpose of their trip was not clear. (FT)

Sir Paul Reeves, the Commonwealth Secretary General's representative to Fiji, will visit Fiji from July 1-5 accompanied by Albert Mariner, the political adviser of the Commonwealth Secretariat. Interim Prime Minister Commodore Voreqe Bainimarama said Sir Paul would consult key stakeholders including the interim Government and political parties to determine the modus operandi and a terms of reference of the political forum to be convened within a multilateral framework, which will be facilitated by the UN and the Commonwealth Secretariat.
