Ministry rewards Taveuni Sub-Divisional Hospital
Jul 4, 2008, 11:11

Taveuni mums are being encouraged to breastfeed their babies until such a time they are sure their babies will grow into healthy toddlers.

Minister for Health, Women and Social Welfare Dr Jiko Luveni, expressed these sentiments when she re-awarded Taveuni Sub-Divisional Hospital with a Baby Friendly Hospital Initiative last night.

Speaking to senior managers from the Northern Divisional Health Services, health-care professionals and staff of Taveuni Hospital, Dr Luveni emphasised the need for mothers to breast-feed babies and to ensure that Fiji raises healthy children.

Dr Luveni encouraged mothers of Taveuni to join other mothers in Fiji in breastfeeding their babies to honour Fijis commitments to our Millennium Development Goals in raising healthy babies and children.

The Minister paid tribute to all Taveuni mums for breastfeeding their babies and thanked the staff of Taveuni Sub-Divisional Hospital for adopting and sharing with the community the principles of being Baby Friendly.

The re-award of Taveuni Sub-Divisional Hospital, an important event on the Ministry's Maternal and Child Health calendar every year, pushes Fiji to the Number One Spot as the first Baby Friendly Nation in the whole South Pacific.

Dr Luveni recorded her delight on Fiji's behalf at the Taveuni ceremony last night on this status and encouraged all mothers in Fiji to take the country to another level and maintain a healthy and robust nation in terms of maternal and child health.
