More than 200 young people will converge in Sigatoka tomorrow for a major clean up campaign and awareness drive to mark International Youth Day.

International Youth Day which falls on August 12th annually will be marked this Saturday 9th August with clean up activities at the Sigatoka Market Public Convenience and along the banks of the Sigatoka River.

The campaign which is being spearheaded by the National Youth Advisory Board and supported by the Ministry of youth and Sports has gained strong support from local businesses and the Sigatoka business community.

Stakeholders that have lent their support to the event include the Sigatoka Town Council, Tappoos, Pratap Investments Limited, WWF South Pacific Programme, Telecom, Carpenters Hardware and Pasifika Voices.

Two buses will cart about 60 young people from Suva and Lautoka respectively to Sigatoka early on Saturday, to participate in the event.

Director of Youth and Sports, Josefa Matau commended the effort of the National Youth Advisory Board in mobilizing volunteer and business support for the initiative.

“This year’s theme is Youth and Climate Change: A time for action and is aligned to this effort by young people and also to support the current work of the Department of Environment in actioning the Environment Act,” Mr Matau said.

Mr Matau said there is still a great need for a change of attitudes and mindsets in the management of their environment.

“The Ministry of Youth through this International Youth Day event is supporting the work of its counterpart in Government by mobilizing young people to do the right and basic thing and that is to place rubbish in the proper place and take pride in their surroundings and the communities they live in,” Mr Matau said.
