Villagers of Malabi in the district of Wailevu in Tailevu now have a safer and more reliable access to and from the village following the commissioning of the Malabi Community Access Road by the Minister for Rural and Maritime Development and Disaster Management, Hon. Sakiasi R Ditoka today (15.01.26).
With this new infrastructure development, villagers, particularly women and children no longer have to disembark along Kings Road and walk at least 10 minutes inland to reach their homes.
Speaking at the commissioning, Hon. Ditoka said the project reflected Government’s focus on delivering practical rural infrastructure that directly improved quality of life.
“This road improves safety, access and opportunity for the people of Malabi, especially those who are most affected when access is poor,” Minister Ditoka said.
Malabi Village elder Ms. Vani Keteivalu, 75, welcomed the development, acknowledging Government for addressing a long-standing need in the village.
“This road will greatly transform the lives of our women,” Ms. Keteivalu said. “It will make daily travel easier and safer and help our families in many ways.”
Malabi Village headman Mr. Sakeasi Kakaivalu said the new road would have a positive impact across the entire community.
“This development benefits the whole village. It strengthens access, supports livelihoods and improves safety, especially during bad weather,” Mr. Kakaivalu said.
Funded under the Ministry of Rural and Maritime Development and Disaster Management’s Community Access Roads, Footpaths and Footbridges (CARFF) Programme at a cost of more than $40,000, the Malabi Access Road will benefit more than 250 villagers from over 35 households.
This $44,000 investment by the Government will provide essential access to newly expanded residential areas within the community of Malabi, ensuring improved connectivity, safety, and convenience for residents. This new development will also support community growth, facilitate transportation, and enhance access to basic services for the people of Malabi.
