The Ra Christian Cemetery in Rakiraki has been assisted with a grant of $8,766.25 for the construction of restroom facilities for families and members of the public visiting the cemetery to say a final goodbye to their loved ones.
President of the Ra Christian Cemetery, Mr. Praveen Ramswarup, said the project was a long-awaited need for the community.
“We are very thankful to the Ministry of Multi-Ethnic Affairs for granting our request. For a long time, people faced difficulties during funerals as there were no convenience facilities available. Mourners, including women and children, often had to travel back to town or to nearby homes to use a washroom during services, which was very inconvenient,” Mr. Ramswarup explained.
He added that the cemetery not only serves the Christian community of Rakiraki but also people from other districts who bring their loved ones for burial.
“Funeral services usually take hours, with prayers and preaching, and people travel from far places. Having a washroom facility here will make a big difference, especially for women and children. We are very grateful to the Minister and the Government of the day for their support,” he said.
The Minister for Multi-Ethnic Affairs and Sugar Industry, Hon. Charan Jeath Singh, said the project reflects the Government’s strong commitment to supporting communities with practical needs that improve lives.
He said that through the Multi-Ethnic Grant Program, the Coalition Government is ensuring that no community is left behind, with access to essential facilities that align with the Sustainable Development Goals.
The Ministry of Multi-Ethnic Affairs continues to implement projects under the Multi-Ethnic Grant Program to ensure equitable access to essential services for all communities across Fiji.
