A fossil fuel-free future must be a short-term goal, not just a long-term ambition, says Deputy Prime Minister and Minister for Finance Hon. Biman Prasad.
Speaking at the closing of the 2024 Global Development Conference at the University of the South Pacific in Suva, Professor Prasad called for urgent global action to address climate change.
Professor Prasad highlighted the severe impacts of this year’s record-breaking climate disasters, with economic losses exceeding $1 trillion.
He emphasised that Fiji is taking bold steps, including launching its National Carbon Market Strategy, to transition away from fossil fuels and build resilience.
“The Pacific cannot be the dumping ground for the world’s plastic and fossil fuel waste. We must act now to protect our oceans and our future,” he said.
With over 750 participants from more than 60 countries, the conference underscored the need for collaboration between researchers, policymakers, and communities.
Professor Prasad urged attendees to connect evidence with action, saying, “Your research must disrupt conventional approaches and inspire solutions for a better tomorrow.”
Fiji’s leadership on climate action continues to set an example for the global community.
