Beqa Island, [09/08/23] – In a proactive move to address the state of healthcare infrastructure, the Minister for Health, Dr. Atonio Lalabalavu, conducted an insightful visit to Beqa Island. The purpose of this visit was to closely examine the medical facilities and services available on the island, underlining the government’s commitment to delivering quality healthcare to all citizens.
Minister Lalabalavu conducted tours of the Health Centre in Dakuibeqa and the Nursing Station in Raviravi as part of the visit.
These vital facilities serve as lifelines for the people of Beqa, providing essential medical care and services. The Minister expressed keen interest in assessing their current condition and the challenges faced by both healthcare providers and patients.
Minister Lalabalavu’s determination to oversee the state of healthcare infrastructure extends beyond Beqa Island. Since assuming office, he has undertaken a series of visits to various medical facilities across the nation.
He emphasized the importance of these assessments, stating, “Our priority is to ensure that every Fijian has access to proper healthcare services. By personally visiting these facilities, we can identify areas that need urgent attention and formulate effective strategies for improvement.”
One of the significant developments during the visit was the announcement of a generous donation from the Bank of the South Pacific (BSP) earmarked for the maintenance of the Colonial War Memorial Hospital. This contribution from the private sector is particularly significant as the government grapples with financial constraints resulting from accumulated national debt.
Minister Lalabalavu lauded this gesture, stating, “We are grateful for the support of organizations like BSP. Their commitment to the well-being of our citizens is truly commendable and underscores the spirit of collaboration that is essential in addressing our healthcare challenges.”
The Minister acknowledged the contributions from local businesses, individuals, and overseas entities. He emphasized the need for collective efforts to address the pressing healthcare infrastructure issues.
“The scale of the task ahead is considerable,” Minister Lalabalavu remarked, “and we cannot afford to delay action. It is heartening to witness the support from various quarters, and together, we can ensure that our healthcare facilities are equipped to provide the best possible care to our people.”
As part of the visit, Minister Lalabalavu also symbolically handed over a fiberglass boat fitted with a 40HP outboard motor to the Raviravi Nursing Station. This addition aims to enhance accessibility to healthcare services, particularly in remote areas, demonstrating the government’s commitment to bridging gaps in healthcare delivery.
The Beqa Medical area is currently served by a doctor and two nurses stationed at the Beqa Health Centre in Dakuibeqa, with an additional Nursing Practitioner based at the Raviravi Nursing Station.
Collectively, they cater to the medical needs of 1,789 individuals, accentuating the crucial role these healthcare professionals play in safeguarding community health.
