“Soil plays a vital role in the earth’s ecosystem and without soil, human life would be very difficult.”
This was the message from the Assistant Minister for Rural and Maritime Development, Hon. Jovesa Vocea, to farmers from all over the North who were gathered at Nayarabale Village, in Vaturova, Cakaudrove today (05.12.23) to celebrate World Soil Day.
Asst. Minister Vocea, speaking on the theme of the celebration “Soil and Water A source of Life”, emphasised the need to engage in sustainable practices, to maintain soil health.
“Soil provides the foundation for food production, eco-system and human well-being.”
He highlighted the evolution of agriculture from subsistence farming to market driven production, where individuals have taken soil for granted.
Nayarabale Village, which has leased 350 hectares of land for reforestation and allocated a plot of land for Climate Smart Agriculture operated by the women’s group, has also been a model farm for farmers in the North.
Asst. Minister Vocea encouraged farmers to take proactive measures to safeguard these resources for the future generation.
