The Fiji Girl Guides Association National Camp officially kicked off today (11.12.23) at Queen Victoria School, after a four-year lapse. The opening ceremony was graced by the presence of the First Lady, Madam Vilomena Katonivere.
In her opening address, Madam Katonivere expressed her humility in being part of this significant event as the Patron of the Girl Guides Association. She emphasised the importance of the camp, where young girls from across Fiji gather to participate in activities that are an integral part of the school curriculum.
The theme for this year’s camp is ‘Understanding our brave and safe space.’ Madam Katonivere commended the choice of a powerful and relevant theme, acknowledging the myriad challenges faced by children and youths today, such as peer pressure, cyberbullying, substance abuse, and climate change.
Addressing the young participants, she stressed the vulnerability of youth in society and the collective duty of adults to provide and protect their “brave and safe place.”
Madam Katonivere encouraged the girls to actively engage in the camp’s activities, which include talks, visits, physical activities, and hands-on learning experiences.
“You will meet new friends, learn new ideas and skills, and be ready to do your part when the need arises,” she said.
The First Lady also thanked the guide leaders for their commitment and dedication to volunteerism, noting their crucial role in enriching and empowering the lives of young girls.
In closing, Madam Katonivere wished all participants a blessed Christmas and a prosperous New Year on behalf of His Excellency the President and the Nation.
