The State of Qatar and the Republic of Fiji established formal diplomatic relations In a ceremony in New York yesterday (October 20).
The signed communiqué establishing diplomatic relations calls upon Fiji and Qatar to develop bilateral cooperation between the two countries in areas of political, social, humanitarian, cultural and scientific endeavor.
Ambassador Nassir Al-Nasser of Qatar welcomed the establishment of formal diplomatic relations and the strengthening of existing friendly relations between Qatar and Fiji.
Fiji's Ambassador to the United Nations, His Excellency Peter Thomson and Ambassador Nassir Al-Nasser of Qatar during the signing of the communiqué formally establishing diplomatic relations in New York yesterday.
He said the ceremony was a good example of follow-on from the Arab League-PSIDS Summit held in Abu Dhabi in July 2010 and looked forward to further positive developments in bilateral relations between Qatar and Fiji
Fiji was represented at the ceremony by Fiji’s Ambassador to the United Nations, His Excellency Peter Thomson and counsellor Luke Daunivalu.
After the signing ceremony, Ambassador Thomson said both Qatar and Fiji had expressed assurances that their formalisation of diplomatic relations would further strengthen international peace and cooperation.
Ambassador Thomson said Qatar had shown keen appreciation of the desire of Fiji and the PSIDS countries to commit to their full rights and obligations as member states of the United Nations.
He said the Fiji Mission in New York would be working with the Qatar Mission to further develop bilateral relations.
