GEORGIA-FIJI RELATIONS POSITIVE

06/06/2012

Georgia-Fiji relations continue to show positive signs of growth after a meeting yesterday(5/6/12) between Georgia’s Ambassador in Canberra, His Excellency Vladimer Konstantinidi and the Minister for Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation, Ratu Inoke Kubuabola.

Fiji and Georgia established diplomatic relations in March 2010 and since then, Fiji has continued to receive delegations from Georgia.

In November last year, the Minister for Foreign Affairs, HE Grigol Vashadze arrived with his delegation.

Early this year, a delegation from the Ministry of Education in Georgia came to donate more than 200 Net Books to schools around Fiji.

Minister for Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation, Ratu Inoke Kubuabola said the  meeting focused on strengthening bilateral relations with prospects of accrediting the closest Fiji Mission to Georgia and vice versa.

In that regard, formal processes will soon take place to ensure Fiji’s Embassy in Brussels is accredited to Georgia. Georgia is also expected to reciprocate in a similar manner, with their Embassy in Canberra as the likely choice.

Other items in  discussed  in  the  meeting  included the six-scholarship offered by the Georgian Government. Three of these scholarships will be for students to attend Georgia’s state university, while the other three will be for the state medical university. Fiji is now tasked to identify specific areas of need in order to utilize this opportunity.

Moreover, a Development Cooperation Agreement (DCA) has been provided for the Georgian delegation to identify areas of mutual collaboration between the two countries.
