The Fiji Navy’s capability to ensure safety at sea has received a boost after the handing-over of a new Hydrographic Vessel ‘RFNS Volasiga’ from the Government of the Republic of Korea.

This was highlighted by the Acting Minister for Defence and National Security, Hon. Dr Mahendra Reddy while officiating at the handing ceremony of the ‘RFNS Volasiga’ this morning at the Stanley Brown Naval Base.

“This will further boost the Fiji Navy’s capability in producing updated data for nautical charts, for the safety of all mariners traversing our waters and in supporting Fiji’s Blue Economy,” Minister Reddy said.

“As a maritime nation, we rely immensely on our oceans not only for our daily livelihood but as a means for security and prosperity for our people. It is without a doubt that our sea lanes of communications must be secured and safe in order ensure a prosperous economy.

“The safety and security of our people, our friends and our visitors is paramount to the Ministry and ensuring the safety of navigation in our waters is a key part of Fiji’s international maritime obligation under Safety of Life at Sea (SOLAS) Convention and a responsibility as a member of the International Maritime Organisation and the International Hydrographic Commission.”

Minister Reddy added that one of Government’s priorities was to ensure Fiji’s progress into a modernized state, and a donation of this magnitude is a direct reflect of Government’s intent.

“The state of the art Hydrographic vessel RFNS Volasiga ensures Fiji’s capability in defence and national security is enhanced to a modern state where updated and current data will be made available.”

“We acknowledge the continuous support from the Republic of Korea in terms of its strategic commitment in assisting small island states such as Fiji.”

The RFNS Volasiga was purchased by the Republic of Korea for the Fiji Navy.
