KADAVU JOINT INSPECTION HIGHLIGHTS URGENT ENVIRONMENTAL NEEDS AND SUSTAINABLE LAND MANAGEMENT OPPORTUNITIES

04/09/2025

A recent joint inspection undertaken in Kadavu highlights critical environmental concerns and collaborative opportunities for sustainable land management. The teams involved include the Kadavu Provincial Council (PCO), Ministry of Lands & Survey, Department of Mineral Resources, iTaukei Affairs Land Trust Board, Fiji Roads Authority, Ministry of Environment, Ministry of Forestry, and the Ministry of Local Government & Department of Local Country Planning.

Key Findings:
· Rehabilitation Needs: Areas near quarry and processing sites require urgent rehabilitation. Forestry departments are encouraged to support native species replanting through nursery programs to restore ecological balance.

· Native Species Monitoring: Sightings of Class 1 native species such as Dakua Makadre, Yaka, and Velau along Naceva and Namara indicate the importance of stricter monitoring to prevent illegal harvesting or disturbance.

· Invasive Species Spread: Acacia mangium has been observed near Muanisolo, with a noted gradual spread. An action plan is necessary to manage this invasive species effectively.

· Riparian Zone Conservation: Clearing activities along riparian zones are putting these vital areas under pressure. Implementing buffer protections and replanting with vetiver grass or indigenous species is critical for erosion control and habitat preservation.

· Community Engagement: Communities have expressed interest in replanting initiatives and training programs. Forestry authorities are advised to assist with awareness campaigns, nursery development, and control of fires and invasive species.

· Biodiversity Concerns: Notable biodiversity presence near logged areas underscores the need for collaboration with the Environment Ministry to conduct impact assessments and develop conservation strategies.

Next Steps:
· Develop a comprehensive joint rehabilitation and monitoring plan involving all agencies.
· Establish clear communication channels to provide timely feedback to landowners and local communities.
· Promote community-based nurseries focused on indigenous species to foster local participation and sustainable practices.

This coordinated approach aims to enhance environmental protection, community involvement, and sustainable land use in Kadavu, ensuring the preservation of its unique biodiversity and natural resources.
