The Ministry of Fisheries is seeking suitably qualified applicants for the following vacancies detailed below:

Mfish 18/121 - 126: Fisheries Assistant (Extension and Advisory Services) - (7 posts)

Appointment Period: 3 years
Duty Station Lami (2 post), Kavala, Savusavu, Lautoka, Gau, Labasa and
travel to other divisions as and when required.


Facilitate the implementation of offshore fishery, inshore fishery, inland fishery and aquaculture management and development plans, infrastructure development, promotion of community-based fisheries, institutional strengthening, industry development and the re-seeding of reefs, rivers, water-ways and dams.

Person Specification

A Diploma in Fisheries, Marine Science, Marine Affairs, or Biological Science from a recognized institution or equivalent technical courses/ certification with at least 3 years of work experience. In addition to this the following Knowledge, Experience, Skills and Abilities will be required to perform this role:

Knowledge and Experience

• Working knowledge across key areas of Extension and Advisory Services with sound understanding of fisheries management principles
• Experience in conducting public/community awareness programs
• Able to logically evaluate information, identify key issues and draw sound conclusions
• Able to solve issues and meet challenges that is met within the field of Monitoring, Control and Surveillance work
• Develops productive working relationships with staff and stakeholders by building rapport, understanding needs and delivering expectations

Skills and Abilities

• Communicate effectively across a wide range of people and expresses ideas clearly and coherently both verbally and in writing
• Have a high level of ethics and integrity and be able to maintain confidentiality and take responsibility for actions
• Able to meet deadlines and achieve results personally and through effective team leadership and coordination
• Dedicated and honest in delivering to tasks and dealing with assets and sales
• Capacity to utilize computer programs to support operations
• Understanding of I-Taukei customs and traditions
