Residents of Bilo settlement in Veisari now have no excuse to pollute the environment after 3 ‘skip bins’ were officially handed over to them today (31/11/24).
The bins, donated by the Embassy of the Republic of Malaysia, were handed over by the Assistant Minister in the Office of the Prime Minister Hon. Sakiusa Tubuna.
In partnership with the environmental group ‘Eco Guardians,’ the donation coincided with a general clean-up campaign organised by the group members around the settlement and its vicinity.
As stated by Hon. Tubuna, the gathering on Saturday may have been small, but it signified a strong commitment to fostering a cleaner, safer world. The exercise also emphasised the significance of collective action in improving the quality of life within the community.
“The themes “Stop Life-Threatening Pollution” and “Peace, Stability, and Prosperity” highlight the critical urgency for society to embrace a transformative change in perspective,” said Assistant Minister Tubuna.
“These themes serve as a call to action, urging every one of us to take decisive action toward fostering a cleaner environment and promoting harmonious coexistence.”

It is acknowledged that detrimental actions adversely affect our natural resources and ecosystems. To safeguard our flora and fauna, Government has undertaken significant initiatives to promote sustainable development and ensure a healthier future for subsequent generations.
Elaborating further, Assistant Minister Tubuna said one of the biggest challenges in the drive to protect our environment is the mindset of the people.
“Our curriculum must also emphasise our challenges so that our children are informed about the risks posed by pollution and alternative waste disposal methods,” adds the Assistant Minister.
Forming strategic partnerships with other nations and collaborating closely with civil society organisations can help the nation effectively navigate our pathway to success.
Bilo Settlement, a vital community close to Suva Harbour, plays a critical role in ongoing initiatives to maintain the harbour’s cleanliness. The recent clean-up campaign reflects the settlement’s commitment to achieving a cleaner, healthier future for all.
Before Saturday’s event, the settlement access road was upgraded by Government allowing bus access and a shorter walk for residents to catch the bus.
