The Multi-Purpose Evacuation Centre at Maumi Village, in the district of Bau, Tailevu, was officially opened today (16 January 2026) by the Minister for Rural and Maritime Development and Disaster Management, Hon. Sakiasi Ditoka.
The project, valued at $739,023, was constructed by Chands Mega Home Investment and will serve approximately 42 households in Maumi Village.
In his address, Hon. Ditoka thanked the Vanua and people of Maumi for their patience, cooperation, and strong sense of ownership, noting that the facility was built to meet community needs and should be cared for as a shared resource for present and future generations. He said the centre reflects Government’s commitment to inclusive, sustainable development and strengthened disaster resilience.
The Minister also acknowledged the International Organization for Migration (IOM) and the Korea International Cooperation Agency (KOICA) for facilitating the project and working closely with the community to ensure high technical standards.
Turaga ni Koro Jone Lacarua said Maumi Village has long been vulnerable to storm surges and lacked a proper evacuation centre.
“In the past, villagers sought shelter in churches, and evacuations were especially challenging for persons with disabilities due to the close proximity of houses,” he said.
“We are deeply grateful for this assistance. While today’s generation benefits directly, future generations will benefit even more.”
