Access to climate finance, Nationally Determined Contributions (NDC) and loss and mitigation were some of the key issues highlighted at the CHOGM Climate Breakfast – Building Consensus for Climate Finance in the Commonwealth forum.
Participating at this event, Minister for Fisheries and Forestry, Hon. Alitia Bainivalu, highlighted two key targets under Fiji’s NDC for the Ministry of Forestry.
“Target 10 is to conserve natural environment and biodiversity wealth, enabling sustainable long-term provision of ecosystem services, including carbon sequestration potential,” she said.
“Target 11 is to plant 30 million trees in 15 years—a priority of the Ministry which started in 2012.”
“Under this initiative, 19 million trees have been planted so far which includes native, exotic, mangrove and fruit trees,” she added.
Through other climate finance support, Fiji will be able to meet these NDC targets before the 15 years end in 2035.
