With Fiji moving towards sustainability, Sulueti Lotu of Nanukuloa, Ra, is transforming ordinary waste packaging from her home into extraordinary pieces of jewellery.

By redesigning discarded materials, she crafts unique earrings, necklaces, and purses that not only reflect eco-conscious artistry but also shine a light on the beauty found in the most unexpected places.

“All my art is made from waste papers, recycled waste from the kitchen, like packets of milk and packets of mosquito coil,” the 74-year-old said.

“I cut in a pattern and then roll it and then vanish it to make it shine.”

She said that along with selling her creations, she also wears the jewellery herself.

“I used to weave mats, but there were so many weavers, so I looked for an alternative, and my creativity led me to this path.

“I’m very proud and very happy to do this.”

Acknowledging the support of her family, she advised women to never lose hope in life.
