Tonight, Vilomena and I deem it an honour and we are extremely pleased to be part of this official celebration banquet as we gather to celebrate the auspicious occasion of the Chinese New Year, marking the beginning of the Year of the Dragon.
I must express my sincere gratitude to Madam Fang Fang Wu Jamnadas, the President of the Fiji China Friendship Association for the invitation extended to me to be your Guest of honour at this important event.
The Chinese New Year symbolizes renewal, prosperity, and the promise of new beginnings. It holds a special place in the hearts of millions around the world and it is considered the most solemn festival of the year for every Chinese.
I am pleased to mention this evening that our very own Chinese communities in Fiji have long been an integral part of our nation’s cultural fabric, enriching our society with their traditions, values, and contributions. You have played a significant role through your hard work, resilience, and dedication, in fostering cultural diversity and promoting understanding between our peoples.
Furthermore, on behalf of Government and all its citizens, I express my deepest appreciation to the Chinese communities for your unwavering commitment to Fiji’s development and prosperity. Your entrepreneurial spirit, innovation, and dedication to excellence have made invaluable contributions to our nation’s economic growth and social cohesion.
The Fiji China Friendship Association has been a cornerstone in fostering closer ties between our nations, promoting cultural exchange, and enhancing people-to-people connections. Your efforts in strengthening bilateral relations between Fiji and the People’s Republic of China, as well as within the local communities, are commendable.
Allow me to extend a special acknowledgment to His Excellency Ambassador Zhou Jian. Your Excellency’s unwavering commitment to strengthening the bonds between our nations is deeply appreciated and serves as a testament to the enduring friendship between Fiji and the People’s Republic of China.

Ladies and gentlemen, this evening, as we celebrate the Year of the Dragon, we embrace the spirit of this majestic creature – a symbol of strength, courage, and good fortune. Synonymous to the Dragon let us embrace the spirit of renewal, wisdom, transformation, and prosperity. May this new year bring us closer together as we work towards a harmonious future of shared prosperity and mutual understanding.
