Fire fighters at the National Fire Authority Labasa Station have been applauded for their swift actions during a major fire on Tuesday (29.08.23) enabling it to be contained.
While addressing the team this afternoon (01.09.23) the Minister for Housing and Local Government Hon. Maciu Katamotu said there could have been more damages incurred, if it was not for their swift actions.
He was informed that with only 11 officers on duty that day, the rest of team who were not on duty joined their colleagues to help stop the fire.
“Some of the people commenting on social media are not aware of the sacrifices each of you made to ensure the fire was contained,” Hon. Katamotu said.
“That’s the biggest sacrifice a human being can do, sacrificing his life to save people.”
One of the officers was Mohammed Waseem who was taking his daughter to the dentist, left his wife and daughter in his car away from the fire, and rushed to the station to assist his colleagues.
While applauding them, he reminded the officers of their calling and that they should give their best whilst carrying out their duties.
“You have been called to serve the people of Labasa, and the people of Fiji, and I would like to commend you for the work you carried out that day, and I would like to urge you that in whatever you do, give your best,” Hon. Katamotu said.
There were a total of 27 officers that helped put out the fire on Tuesday (29.08.23).
