Nasova, Suva – 25 September 2024: The Fiji Immigration Department commenced its three-day induction training for newly recruited Immigration Officers. The new recruits will play a critical role in safeguarding Fiji’s borders.
The Permanent Secretary for Home Affairs and Immigration, Mr. Mason Smith, reminded them of the importance of their roles as the gatekeepers of Fiji’s security and facilitators of economic progress.
The programme will cover essential topics such as border enforcement, immigration laws, visa processing, human trafficking, and people smuggling.
“Today is a day of new beginnings for all of you stepping into your roles as the future guardians of Fiji’s borders. You are entering a mission that is not only critical to our national security but also pivotal to our identity and economic growth,” PS Smith said.
The training is supported by key international partners, including the Australian Border Force, Immigration New Zealand, and the International Organisation for Migration (IOM), who have provided invaluable assistance in delivering this comprehensive training programme.
PS Smith expressed his gratitude for their collaboration, noting that their expertise enhances the Fiji Immigration Department’s capacity to meet global immigration management standards.
PS Smith stressed that the officers’ training would serve as the foundation for their success in the immigration field, adding, “This is your opportunity to absorb as much knowledge as you can and prepare for the responsibilities that await you at the frontlines.”
PS Smith concluded by reminding the officers of the department’s core values, including transparency, accountability, integrity, and professionalism, which will guide them in their service to the nation.
