More than 2000 villagers in the district of Naceva and Nakasaleka, Kadavu is expected to benefit from the new Vunisei to Vacalea Road once it is completed.
The road will increase access to the villages of Dravuwalu, Yavitu, Soso, Joma, Niudua, Nacomoto, Kadavu Koro, Namajiu, Vacaleya, Lavidi and Vunisei, and take away the $400 they pay in boat fees.
Minister for Public Works, Meteorological Services and Transport was on the island to see firsthand the progress of road construction works on the ground.
Minister Tuisawau was briefed by the Fiji Roads Authority team on the status of the project and challenges faced.
In response, Minister Tuisawau said this is a long overdue project and there is a need to complete it as soon as possible.
“I have just the travelled the new road from Vunisei to Vacalea and I have seen that there are works that needs to be done to complete the project.
“There are areas that needs to be graveled and also crossings to be constructed.
“This project is long overdue and there is a need to speed up works to complete it for people to use.
The project will benefit the villagers and schools such as Vunisea School, Dravuwalu District School, Yavitu Government Youth School, and Naceva District School which only accessed by boat which cost them $200 one way.
The Vunisei to Vacalea Access Road entails construction of approximately 32 km of unsealed road within the district of Naceva and Nakasaleka. The roadworks consists of 7.8km of design-and-build section from Vunisei Village Junction to Vukavu Village Junction. These consists of construction of 9 low level crossings and pilot cut section of 24.2km of road alignment from Vukavu Junction to Vacalea Village.
