AS chief executive officer of Star Hospitality Pte Limited, Anand Sami Kumar embodies the transformative potential of Micro, Small, and Medium Enterprises (MSMEs) in driving economic growth, even amidst adversity.

Located in the heart of Nadi town, the company that began operations in November 2010 started as a modest venture but has since grown into a trusted supplier for Fiji’s hospitality industry, employing a team of 36 dedicated staff.

Initially focused on designing and producing uniforms and apparel, Star Hospitality expanded under Mr Kumar’s visionary leadership.

His entrepreneurial passion has enabled the company to explore new markets and adapt to the ever-changing needs of its customers.

“MSMEs are the backbone of our economy. For us, it has always been about adapting, learning and finding ways to meet the needs of our customers,” Mr Kumar shared.

Over the years, Star Hospitality has faced significant challenges, including natural disasters and economic disruptions.

The entrepreneur shared severe flooding in 2012 and the devastating effects of Tropical Cyclone Winston in 2016 posed substantial setbacks.

“However, the company demonstrated remarkable resilience, investing in sublimation machines to transition into manufacturing uniforms and high-quality linens for hotels and resorts in Nadi and Sigatoka. These strategic moves ensured both growth and sustainability.”

“The COVID-19 pandemic brought new trials, severely impacting MSMEs across the nation. For Star Hospitality, government support through the National Export Strategy (NES) assistance program became a vital lifeline.”

Mr Kumar highlighted that the National Exporter Strategy program provided the lifeline they needed. “It allowed us to sustain our operations and keep our workforce employed during an incredibly challenging time.”

Since its inception, the NES program has invested over $16 million in 120 micro, small, and medium enterprises across sectors such as agriculture and manufacturing.

The strategy is designed to foster a dynamic export environment, driving sustainable economic growth and ensuring Fijian products succeed in global markets.

The program aims to enhance Fiji’s export capacity and competitiveness, with a strong focus on economic diversification.

The Government, through NES, is laying the foundation for a more vibrant, diverse economy that delivers real benefits for all Fijians.

Mr Kumar further added that the company’s success lies in its commitment to quality and its ability to pivot during crises.

“As an MSME, we have to stay agile and be ready to evolve with the demands of the market. Star Hospitality has become a beacon of resilience and innovation, showcasing how MSMEs can overcome challenges to achieve long-term success.

"MSME's like us play a critical role in fostering innovation, creating employment opportunities, and driving economic resilience in Fiji.”

Looking ahead, Star Hospitality’s future is as ambitious as its past achievements. The company has acquired land currently under survey, with plans to build a larger factory and further expand its business operations.

“Our goal is to continue serving as a reliable partner in the hospitality industry and to demonstrate the transformative power of MSMEs in the Fijian economy,” Mr Kumar shared.
