WATER has been carted to maritime islands off Vanua Levu hit by the prolonged dry weather.
Divisional Planning Officer northern Ratu Eliki Tikoidraubuta said the MV Kaiwai had delivered water to Yanuca Island where villagers have begun relying on rain water because sources have dried up.
“The barge then refilled from Taveuni before it delivered water to Yacata Island,” Ratu Eliki said.
“There are about 70 households on Yacata and 90 on Yanuca that will benefit from the water delivery.”
Yacata relies on borehole for its water supply while those on Yanuca depend on rain that they store in tanks.
The MV Kaiwai is headed for Suva to load the second lot of housing materials for rehabilitation works in villages along the Udu coastline.
“When the Kaiwai returns then we will consider the delivery of water to Cikobia and Navatu Island off Kubulau district in Bua,” he said.
Ratu Eliki said they have an estimated budget of about $86,000 for the delivery of water to stricken areas.
