Today, we welcome and commission the first of these vessels, our new flagship – “Sigavou”. In i’Taukei, of course, it means “New Day” and that’s what this occasion marks – the beginning of a new era of inter-island shipping in Fiji.

This is a wonderful new initiative that will forge a closer partnership between the Fiji Pine Group and landowners as the Group continues to demonstrate to Fijians that the Pine Industry can not only be sustainable, but profitable.
When Amex Resources was granted a lease for their iron sands project, which includes the construction of this new wharf in Lautoka, it was only after careful consideration of the big picture, of how it will impact Fiji and Fijians in the long-term.
Across a broad front, my Government is commited to delivering results to the Fijian people, especially to those living in rural and outer island communities.
 I regard it as the solemn duty of every Pacific Islander to assume a personal responsibility to contribute to our conservation effort.
I would like to thank you once again for your presence at this summit. It is through such meetings that we are able to discuss relevant issues, raise necessary concerns and develop new strategies for the future.
In conclusion, as your host, allow me to express once again our sincere thanks to all of you distinguished panel members and resource personnel for your dedication to the success of the Panel.
I congratulate each one of you. I know I am joined by my brother and sister judges, masters, and magistrates and I congratulate you on behalf of your families, your communities and your country.
