04/12/2012

Cabinet has endorsed the Boxing Commission of Fiji (Amateur Boxing Association of Fiji) Regulations 2012.

The Regulations establishes the Amateur Boxing Association of Fiji.

The Amateur Boxing Association of Fiji will be tasked with the administration of amateur boxing in Fiji and likewise the participation of amateur boxers in the region and internationally.

Cabinet based its decision on a submission by the Minister for Youth and Sports, Commander Viliame Naupoto.

On 6th July 2012 the Boxing Commission of Fiji dissolved the BoxingFiji Association on the basis that it was formed and continued to operate outside the sphere of the Boxing Commission of Fiji Promulgation 2008 with questionable sporting practices especially in terms of the health and safety and support given to amateur boxers in the country.

The Minister explains that consequently, and in line with the Boxing Commission of Fiji Promulgation 2008, the Boxing Commission of Fiji sought the establishment of the Amateur Boxing Association of Fiji to manage and administer amateur boxing in Fiji.

He said that the establishment of the Association is a step forward in workingtowards the development of amateur boxing and increasing the performance and participation of our amateur boxers in regional and international competitions.

The Minister said that the Regulations specifically provide that amateur boxing in Fiji will be operated in accordance with the AIBA Articles and Rules.

This, he said, will ensure that amateur boxing standards in Fiji are at par with regional and international standards.
