29/1/14 - HEALTH MINISTRY TO ESTABLISH RADIO-ONCOLOGY CENTRE

29/01/2014

The Ministry of Health will now commence work toward the establishment of a National Radio-Oncology Centre.

This follows Cabinet’s decision in agreeing on the need to establish a National Radio-Oncology Centre for cancer patients.

Cabinet based its decision on a submission by the Minister for Health, Dr Neil Sharma who said that currently, all cancer cases are being managed in the Oncology Units of the three divisional hospitals with a multidisciplinary approach from all different disciplines in medicine.

He said that a Radio-Oncology Centre will centralize all the relevant treatment and management for cancer cases with a conducive environment for patients and families.

He said that his Ministry will explore assistance from the International Atomic Energy Agency [IAEA] and the World Health Organization [WHO], as well as some other countries, for the establishment of the National Radio-Oncology Centre.
