The $30 million Nausori Plaza, a modern commercial complex, marks a significant milestone in Nausori’s pursuit of economic development and urban revitalisation.
Officiating at the opening ceremony, Deputy Prime Minister and Minister for Finance and Strategic Planning, Hon. Biman Prasad, emphasised that the plaza has already created employment opportunities for many in the local community and will continue to support jobs in retail, hospitality, and other sectors.
“The plaza provides a platform for small and medium enterprises (SMEs) to grow and succeed, contributing to the revitalisation of local businesses and industries. Local employees will gain valuable skills and expertise, enhancing the capacity of our workforce,” said Hon. Prasad.
He further noted that this development would have a multiplier effect, spurring additional investments and boosting economic activity in Nausori and nearby towns and villages.
DPM Prasad highlighted the Coalition Government’s commitment to fostering investment, job creation, and sustainable economic growth.
“We recognise the importance of maintaining political stability, investing in critical infrastructure, and ensuring a business-friendly environment that supports both local and foreign investors. Projects like the Nausori Plaza are vital to achieving these goals,” he said.
“This development aligns perfectly with our national agenda of inclusive growth, which seeks to empower communities, improve livelihoods, and create a more resilient economy for all Fijians.”
At the same event, which also marked the Chinese New Year celebrations, DPM Prasad acknowledged the profound contributions of the Chinese community in Fiji.
“Though small in number, the Chinese community has had an immeasurable impact on our nation's history and development,” said Hon. Prasad.
“From the early settlers in the 19th century, Chinese migrants brought with them entrepreneurial spirit, a strong work ethic, and a desire to contribute to Fiji’s growth.”
He highlighted their role in advancing businesses, agriculture, and new industries, underscoring their enduring legacy in shaping Fiji’s society.
“Over the past year, our relationship with China has deepened significantly, extending beyond economic collaboration to include cultural and personal ties.
The visit of Mr. Li Qun, China’s Minister of Culture and Tourism, further solidified this relationship, showcasing our commitment to stronger cultural exchange and cooperation,” he added.
Ambassador of the People’s Republic of China to Fiji, Zou Jian, also spoke at the event, reflecting on the strong ties between the two nations.
“China-Fiji relations stand at a new historical starting point, at a crucial moment of building on past achievements and forging ahead. China will work together with Fijian friends to recall the aspirations of establishing diplomatic ties, deepen mutual respect and beneficial cooperation, promote people-to-people exchanges, and move forward towards a community with a shared future for China and Fiji,” said Ambassador Zou Jian.
