20/08/2009

A workshop to create awareness and discuss concerns on the outbreak of Brucellosis in cattle will be held tomorrow at Namosi House.

The meeting is to bring together stakeholders including medical officers, nurses, allied staff and partners, to discuss the possible threat of Brucellosis to humans and the need to develop partnerships against it.

Brucellosis is a contagious and infective bacterial disease of the bacterial genus Brucella. It can spread from animals to humans, making it a threat to public health.

Recently, in Tailevu there was an outbreak of Brucellosis in cattle. Tailevu is one of the premier dairy milk producing areas of Fiji. Consequently animal health teams were dispatched to combat the disease.

The Ministry of Health, aware of the ramifications of the disease outbreak notified the Tailevu Division. As a result a one page information leaflet on Brucellosis was distributed for general awareness.

In addition the Tailevu Health Team together with the Tailevu Divisional Office has commenced a public health awareness program for visitation to villages, settlements and to dairy farms.
