20/06/2025

113 lease offer letters of 99-year residential leases under the Ministry of Housing’s Lot Allocation Policy were handed over yesterday (19-06-25) by the Minister for Lands and Minerals Resources, Hon. Filimoni Vosarogo, and the Minister for Housing and Local Government, Hon. Maciu Nalumisa, at Cuvu, Nadroga.

Minister Vosarogo congratulated the recipients and reminded them of the importance of their success and the government’s unwavering commitment to transforming lives through secure land tenure.

“This land is yours; it is your foundation, your legacy, your future. Use it wisely. Build permanent homes, start businesses, educate your children and create opportunities not only for yourselves but for your neighbours and the next generation.”

“We are delivering dignity, stability, and opportunity to households who have waited with hope and who today step forward into a new chapter of empowerment. Land is not simply a piece of earth beneath our feet. For our people, it is the bedrock of security, identity, and prosperity.”

He also highlighted national and international goals aligned with the groundbreaking ceremony, which included land reform and tenure security, economic empowerment and sustainable land use.

“What we are witnessing today is not just progress on paper; it is real, transformative change in people’s lives.”

Meanwhile, Minister Nalumisa acknowledged the support of traditional landowners, including the “Turaga na Ka Levu”, for his enduring generosity and assistance.

Minister Nalumisa also reassured recipients living across Cuvu settlement that where they are living now is legally their home.

“Families who have called Cuvu home for years will finally receive ‘Security of Tenureship’, allowing them to truly own and shape their future in a community they can now officially call their own.”

The government's shared determination to uplift the lives of thousands of Fijians residing in informal settlements and struggling to access secure, affordable housing.

Hon. Nalumisa highlighted the significance of the groundbreaking ceremony towards the 2025–2029 National Development Plan.

“Pathway of strategic policies designed to improve the wellbeing of all Fijians—by ensuring equitable access to quality services, expanding affordable housing, promoting sustainable urban development, and enhancing public infrastructure and services that are accessible, equitable, inclusive, and climate-resilient.”

Leaseholders were encouraged to utilise their land accordingly for investment and other financial gain.

“You now have the power to invest, build, and pass on secure land to the next generation. With that power comes responsibility to look after the land, build sustainably, and continue fostering unity within the community.”

In his concluding remarks, Hon. Nalumissa highlighted the Informal Settlement Upgrading Programme (ISUP) which remains a priority for this government.

“Your Coalition Government believes that all Fijians, irrespective of background, deserve access to secure land tenure, essential services, and the opportunity to build a better, more dignified future.”
