13 FAMILIES BECOME HOMEOWNERS

15/01/2025

Twelve families residing at the Kalabu (Jale) Estate and one family from the Makoi Housing Estate in Nasinu received offer letters from the Minister for Housing and Local Government, Hon. Maciu Nalumisa for the properties they are living in.

Minister Nalumisa stated that the Government is aware of the housing challenges that have emerged over the years and that the event was a fundamental step towards fulfilling the Government’s vision of empowering Fijians and encouraging the culture of homeownership.

“When families own their homes, they not only secure their own futures, but they also invest in the well-being of their neighbourhoods, communities, society and an economy. Homeowners are more likely to participate in community development, engage in civic activities, and advocate for a better quality of life for themselves and their neighbours.”

“Our focus is assisting low- to middle-income earners, as well as those living in informal settlements, and we are determined to create a more inclusive housing environment for all Fijians,” Minister Nalumisa said.

For Varanisese Bai, of Kalabu Jale Housing, solidifying her stance of being a homeowner is a dream come true and she expressed her gratitude to the Coalition Government for making it a reality.

“We have been eagerly waiting for this day for a long time. Receiving this offer letter from the Coalition Government is a relief for my family. For years we have been seeking assistance from previous governments but to no avail, we finally get to become official homeowners through this Government. After this, my daughter and I plan to extend our home,” she said.

The Public Rental Board was allocated $2 million from the Ministry of Housing’s budget to support its initiatives. This is to ensure that affordable and stable housing is accessible to the most vulnerable members of our communities.
