For Dr. Fifita Niulevu, the journey from her small island home of Naroi, Moala, to becoming a doctor was filled with challenges, sacrifices, and blessings. Now a proud medical officer serving her community, Dr. Niulevu’s story is one of resilience and determination.
“When I was growing up in Moala, I always dreamed of becoming a doctor. But back then, I didn’t know how I could make it happen,” she recalls.
After completing her primary and secondary education in Naroi, she moved to Suva to finish Form 7 at Jai Narayan College, where she learnt about the scholarships offered by the government, which supports students pursuing higher education.
“I had already applied for TELS (Tertiary Education Loan Scheme), but my mum encouraged me to apply for TOPPERS. I didn’t think I’d get it, as the applications had already closed, but I decided to give it a try,” she says.
“Out of so many applicants, I was chosen. That moment changed my life. I knew my parents couldn’t afford the fees, and this scholarship felt like a blessing from God.”
Dr. Niulevu began her medical studies at the University of Fiji, but her journey was far from easy. During her six years of study, she became a mother of two and faced heartbreaking loss when her sister passed away in her third year.
“Losing my sister was one of the hardest times for me. I almost gave up. But I kept reminding myself why I started this journey—for my family and my community.”
Her father, a police officer, also made significant sacrifices to support her journey.
“My dad transferred to Suva to help me; he gave up so much so I could follow my dream. I’ll always be grateful to him and my mum for their prayers and encouragement.”
Dr. Niulevu credits the government scholarship for easing her financial burdens. It covered her tuition fees, as well as allowances for rent and food.
“If it wasn’t for the scholarship, I don’t think I could have made it. It gave me the opportunity to focus on my studies and keep going, even when things got tough.”
Now working as a medical officer in Naroi, Dr. Niulevu feels privileged to serve in her island community.
“I never imagined I’d have the chance to work as a doctor on the island where I grew up. I’m here to give back to the people who raised me.”
Her journey has taught her the value of hard work, faith, and perseverance.
“I’ve always believed in giving your best in everything you do. Work hard, trust in God, and never give up, no matter how tough things get,” she says.
“Opportunities like the TOPPERS scholarship can truly change your life. If you get the chance, take it. Put in the effort, and you’ll be amazed at what you can achieve.”
