The laws of Fiji provide numerous rights and protection for its citizens, however, youth as a key segment of the population is particularly vulnerable to a range of protection risks and deviating towards the wrong side of the law.

Ministry of Youth and Sports Permanent Secretary, Mr Rovereto Nayacalevu, while officiating at the Closing of the Empowerment Training on Law and Order this week, said, “The maintenance of law and order is essential for any society to progress."

A total of 25 youth participants completed a four-day workshop which was held at the Makoi Methodist Church Hall.

Mr Nayacalevu said appropriate guidance and training is vital for young people to make knowledgeable decisions, avoid crime and use their abilities and potential for a sustainable livelihood and success.

"Drawing upon the National Development Plan on developing youth to become productive and participatory and the Ministry’s goal to building pathways to success, this programme has provided you with skills training combined with information and education on law and order."

The participants had also undergone the Seeds of Success (SoS) programme.

“This programme is about planting seeds of positive thoughts, good character, awareness of purpose and habits that support our goals in life,” he said.

Mr Nayacalevu said the Government, through the Ministry of Youth and Sports, wants to unearth and develop the best in these youth, empowering them to be agents of change, development and sustainable livelihood in communities.
