“You all have a fundamental duty to protect our society. You must address inequality in all its forms and act against abuse of political power. Be brave and bold, we all have a duty to protect and develop the Rule of Law.”
This was the challenge laid out by the Attorney-General and Minister for Justice, Hon. Siromi Turaga in his keynote address at the opening of the Fiji Law Society Annual Convention at The Pearl Resort this morning (20/01/23).
“I acknowledge and commend the Fiji Law Society for its strong support for the Rule of Law these past few years under very challenging circumstances. Your strong support for the Rule of Law, and rightly expressing concerns when it has been undermined by government, gave voice to the concerns of many even if it displeased my predecessor.”
The A-G stated that Government is committed to improving how Fiji is governed and that the support of the Fiji Law Society is required. As the Attorney-General, he promised to be inclusive, to be open to listening and discussing positive ways of elevating the legal profession to new heights and as lawyers.
“Our governance needs change. Government is committed to improving how Fiji is governed, and your support is needed. This is not change for the sake of change. The change envisaged is that which ensures Fiji’s adherence to and respect for the Rule of Law.”
The A-G mentioned the Government’s announcement for a review of the Media Industry Development Act as the Act, in its current form is not consistent with the principles of being a free and independent media that is not subjected to draconian laws which helps build an informed society and is able to express and exchange ideas without fear.
Commissioner of the International Commission of Jurists Commission (ICJ), Justice Adolfo Azcuna stated that laws give wisdom and wellness and he wished the participants well on their disussions and exchange of wisdom at the forum.
