As Fiji confronts the growing HIV cases, the Ministry of Health got a timely boost of $USD 263,000 worth of life-saving medical supplies and equipment yesterday (02:05:2025).
Funded by the Fiji Government through the UNDP procurement system, the Ministry of Health is now better equipped with essential HIV, STI, Hepatitis B, and TB medications and diagnostic supplies.
Minister for Health Hon. Atonio Lalabalavu said the handover signified an important step forward in the response to one of the most urgent public health challenges facing Fiji.
“When our traditional procurement systems were under strain, especially during the COVID-19 pandemic, the Government turned to UNDP to help us secure life-saving health commodities. And they responded with speed, reliability and professionalism,” Hon. Lalabalavu stated.
“Through this partnership, we will be able to maintain uninterrupted treatment for people living with HIV, scale up testing across the country, strengthen our TB response, and ensure our GeneXpert machines are operational where they are most needed.”
Minister Lalabalavu said the delivery of supplies was a reaffirmation of shared commitment to health and equity.
“The Ministry of Health and Medical Services has been working hard to contain and manage the HIV outbreak that has impacted communities across Fiji. It is a challenge that requires all of us across government, development partners, healthcare providers and civil society to work together."
“We know the work ahead remains significant. With partners like UNDP and the dedication of our health teams on the ground, we are confident that we can build a stronger, more resilient health system – one that leaves no one behind.”
