The International Organization for Migration (IOM), in partnership with the Government of Fiji through the Ministry of Environment and Climate Change, has launched the Climate Catalytic Fund (CCF), a fast and community-focused financing mechanism to support practical climate solutions for communities most at risk from climate impacts and displacement.
Permanent Secretary for Environment and Climate Change, Dr Sivendra Michael, said the Fund bridges the gap between climate risk data and real action on the ground, ensuring vulnerable communities can access support without being left behind due to technical or proposal-writing barriers.
For its first funding cycle, the CCF will prioritise communities in Ba and Macuata provinces, identified through IOM’s Climate Mobility Innovation Lab and the Risk Index for Climate Displacement (RICD). The Fund will support practical adaptation measures such as flood and drainage improvements, riverbank and coastal protection, climate-resilient livelihoods, and nature-based solutions for communities choosing to remain in place.
Dr Michael confirmed that the Ministry’s Project Development Unit will work directly with communities in Ba and Macuata, providing hands-on technical support to help develop strong and eligible proposals.
IOM Fiji’s Climate Mobility Thematic Lead, Ms Angela Sanders, described the CCF as a catalyst for locally driven climate solutions, noting that similar RICD-linked funds are already supporting high-risk communities in the Philippines, Indonesia and Tuvalu.
The launch of the CCF highlights Fiji’s commitment to making climate finance accessible, practical, and targeted to communities that need it most.
