The Ministry of Employment, Productivity, and Workplace Relations is pleading with members of the public and those abroad to cease the circulation of an outdated video and ABC report on the mistreatment of the Pacific Australia Labour Mobility (PALM) workers on social media.
The Minister for Employment, Hon. Agni Deo Singh, clarified that the circulated content is over eight years old and was investigated and addressed by the appropriate authorities at that time.
He stated that in the past two years since the Coalition government took office, the Ministry has taken substantial steps and made significant improvements to enhance the welfare and working conditions of all workers engaged under the PALM scheme.
"We are committed to ensuring that every Fijian worker is treated with dignity and respect, and we have implemented several strategies to improve the scheme."
"One of the main strategies implemented is the appointment of the three (3) Country Liaison Officers (CLOs) to ensure effective communication and pastoral support for workers. They are dedicated to addressing any concerns and facilitating a better working environment for our Fijian workers.”
Minister Singh further added that the ministry has been continuously engaging with the Government of Australia through the Department of Employment and Workplace Relations (DEWR) and the Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade (DFAT) in enhancing the scheme.
“In addition to this, annual ministerial visits to meet with workers and employers together with relevant Australian government officials have been very effective in bringing to the fore any concerns and addressing them expeditiously. The next visit by the team is expected in the latter part of the year.”
“The Fiji Trades Union Congress (FTUC) is part of the pre-departure briefing to fully inform the workers of their rights under the Australian labour laws. The Australian Workers Union (AWU) is also actively involved in ensuring that the minimum standards are complied with by the employers.”
"We understand that the circulation of outdated information can cause concern among the public and relevant stakeholders, and I urge everyone to consider the context and the significant progress that has been made since the time the video and report were produced,” he added.
Minister Singh encouraged anyone with questions or concerns regarding worker treatment under the Australia PALM Scheme or New Zealand (Recognised Seasonal Employer) Work Scheme to reach out to our ministry directly.
"We are here to listen and to ensure that the rights and welfare of all workers are upheld," said the Employment Minister.
