The Community Law Centre within the Legal Aid Fiji office was officially opened by the Prime Minister Commodore Voreqe Bainimarama.

“The centre will assist in providing civil legal aid services on referral from Legal Aid Fiji,” Commodore Bainimarama said this morning.

“It will also double up as an important practical learning centre for students of the University of the South Pacific (USP), who will provide opinions under the supervision of the manager of the centre.”

The centre is a collaboration between Legal Aid Fiji and the University of the South Pacific.

“It is a privilege for our law school and the university to partner and we are very keen to contribute whatever we can towards Government’s efforts in improving community access to justice in Fiji,” USP Vice-Chancellor Professor Rajesh Chandra said.

Professor Chandra added that the USP was looking forward to strengthening this partnership.

Within two months, the centre assisted 77 Fijians.

The centre has 23 student advisers and a full time manager.

Plans are underway to open a second centre in Nausori.
