Minister Tuisawau Reaffirms  Government’s Commitment to Tackling Traffic Congestion

Suva, Fiji — The Government of Fiji is committed to easing the suffering caused by traffic congestion that affects countless Fijians every day. The Ministry of Public Works, Meteorological Services, and Transport, in collaboration with key stakeholders, has launched a coordinated effort to address this growing issue and bring immediate relief to motorists and passengers.

Traffic congestion continues to be a challenge for many Fijians, leading to lost time, missed opportunities, increased fuel costs, and significant personal stress.
“The government fully understands the difficulties faced by our people and is determined to act swiftly to mitigate these issues,” Minister for Public Works, Meteorological Services, and Transport, Hon. Ro Filipe Tuisawau said.

In partnership with the Land Transport Authority, Fiji Police Force, Fiji Roads Authority, Ministry of Education, Heritage & Arts, and the Ministry of Local Government, the government is looking into implementing practical solutions aimed at reducing congestion. These solutions are being developed with the input of experts and key community stakeholders, ensuring they reflect the needs of the people.

“Shortly, the team will begin an educational awareness campaign on the methods and solutions we intend to implement,” he said.

“So, this campaign is being done in consultation with the public.”

“We are acutely aware of the impact that traffic congestion has on our daily lives—from delays at work, school, and important appointments to the economic losses that ripple through our society,” Minister Tuisawau said.

“This government is resolutely committed to improving the quality of life for all Fijians. Our focus remains on effective and sustainable change, with the goal of delivering tangible benefits to our citizens,” he added.

As a first step, the Government will soon begin trialling a series of targeted measures aimed at easing congestion on key routes and choke points. These trials will be conducted with a focus on real-time feedback from the community, ensuring that the solutions implemented are effective and practical.

“However, the success of these initiatives depends on the cooperation and support of all Fijians. We call on motorists and passengers to remain patient and work with us as we test these new measures. Your involvement and understanding are crucial to the success of this process. Together, we can make a meaningful difference,” he added.

Minister Tuisawau said the Government of Fiji is steadfast in its commitment to creating a more efficient and less stressful transportation environment for all Fijians.

“We have taken on board suggestions that the public has made and will continue to work at options moving forward, including wider roads, more access roads, and also ensuring that the nation is not overwhelmed by unsustainable vehicle numbers.”.

“Together, we can ease traffic congestion and improve the quality of life for every Fijian. The actions would at least alleviate part of the problem, but of course long-term, multi-sector planning and implementation are needed.”
