COLLECTIVE EFFORT NEEDED TO COMBAT CYBER CRIME

24/07/2012

Security cannot be a government owned responsibility said the Acting
Minister for Defence, National Security and Immigration, Mr Joketani
Cokanasiga at the cyber security workshop today.

The workshop held at the Police Academy was attended by government and
private sector representatives as a follow up to the first workshop held in
Nadi last year.

"Fiji is now facing a dramatic change in the security of our environment due
to the emergence of globalisation that had created a borderless state
bringing in new security concerns",  Minister Cokanasiga said.

He said that transnational crime, money laundering, human and drug
trafficking and terrorism are a few international crimes that needs global
regulation.

"Island states, including Fiji are vulnerable to cybercrime activities due
to the sophisticated nature of electronics, inadequate legislation to
monitor and the high level of skills to investigate and prosecute
cybercrime".

The Minister stressed that Fiji is not taking a back seat and had endorsed
the set up of an inter-agency cybercrime working group for research and
recommendation to the Ministry by public and private stakeholders.

Cabinet has also approved the drafting of a cyber security law and the
development of a legal framework to assist the Fiji Police Force.
