The Library Services of Fiji is firm in its efforts to provide quality reading and learning materials to enhance Fiji’s literacy rates and create a knowledge-based society.

Library Services of Fiji director Ms Merewalesi Vueti, while receiving a donation of books today by the Soka Gakkai International (SGI) said the books will inspire those that love reading.

“We are very grateful to SGI for the donation of three cartons of books which will broaden and enhance the knowledge of those who are keen on learning about life,” Ms Vueti said.

“The books donated today consists of children’s literature, philosophical and interestingly, spiritual books.”

Soka Gakkai International (New Zealand) Executive Nationwide Coordinator, Ian Gordon, handed over the books to the Library Services of Fiji.

Mr Gordon said reading is dialogue with oneself and only human beings can fill the society and the world with dialogue.

“Dialogue must be central in our efforts, reaching out to all people everywhere, free of any preconceptions”, Mr Gordon said.

“It has the power to produce great value, revive weary hearts and open closed minds irrespective of a person’s wealth or social position.”

He said the message in these books is that the human spirit has the capacity to transform even the most difficult circumstances, creating value and ever richer meaning to all endeavours.

“When each person brings this limitless capacity to full flower, and ordinary people like you and I unite in a commitment to positive change, a century of life will come into being”, Gordon told guests at today’s handing over ceremony.

“I hope that in some way, the books will enable their readers to develop broader perspectives and illuminate their human goodness,” Mr. Gordon said.

Soka Gakkai means Society for the Creation of Values and Soka Gakkai International (SGI) was founded on January 26, 1975, as a worldwide network of Buddhists dedicated to a common vision of a better world through the empowerment of the individual and the promotion of peace, culture and education.
