“The new Bill will address the current illicit drug landscape nationally, regionally, and internationally.”
This was highlighted by Assistant Minister Assistant Minister for Home Affairs and Immigration, Ratu Rakuita Vakalalabure while opening the Counter Narcotics Bureau Bill Workshop this morning. [10.09.24]
Assistant Minister Vakalalabure emphasised the need for a strong legislation to guide the legal system and assist enforcement officers in combating drugs.
“The pervasive threat of illicit drug trafficking to Fiji's national security, affecting communities, families, and society.”
“The strategic position of Fiji in the Pacific makes it a target for drug trafficking organisations seeking to exploit vulnerabilities.”
The workshop will see a presentation of the Counter Narcotics Bureau Structure & Outcome Report- Legal Review Workshop in Apri 2024 (Illicit Drugs Control Act 2004, Medicinal Products Act and Phamarceutical Professions Act) and also discussions and the way forward with the Counter Narcotics Bureau Bill.
Asst Minister Vakalalabure added the Counter Narcotics Bureau will lead the national effort to disrupt and dismantle drug networks threatening Fiji's way of life.
“The Bureau will focus on breaking the chain of illegal farming, manufacturing, selling, and exporting of drugs and psychotropic substances.”
He added that robust intelligence and enforcement efforts will be used to combat drug trafficking effectively.
As a government initiative, the Counter Narcotics Bureau Bill Workshop supports the government's commitment to build public confidence in defense and security institutions, as well as maintaining Fiji's borders and security institutions.
