The Commissioner of the Fiji Prisons and Corrections Services Brigadier General Ioane Naivalurua last night (October 22) flew out of the country to attend the 11th International Prisons and Corrections Association (ICPA) AGM and conference at Bridgetown, Barbados.
The AGM and Conference will be hosted by the Barbados Prison Service and will be held from October 25 - 30.
Brigadier General Naivalurua who is representing the South Pacific Region will be joining over 100 speakers in 15 plenary sessions including panel discussions and debates.
The theme of this year's conference is "New Horizons" and Fiji's Commissioner has been asked to address the conference on the Fiji Prisons and Corrections Service experience.
The Commissioner will speak specifically on the challenges in management, community responsibility, and effective strategies to reduce prison numbers, the treatment of women offenders and the management of extremist prisoners.
The paper that the Commissioner will be presented will be based on objectives, strategies and outcomes of these five thematic areas.
The Commissioner will also speak on the FPCS Commercialization, the Yellow Ribbon Project and HOPICC (Head of Pacific Islands Corrections Conference).
HOPICC was formed in Honiara, Solomon Islands in 2007 the idea was to give the Pacific Islands state a voice at Asian and Pacific Conference of Correctional Administrations.
The Commissioner said that this is an opportunity to show case Fiji's development and future challenges.
"As the representative of Fiji and the Region this is an ideal opportunity to show what we are doing in terms of development in line with the Fiji Prisons and Corrections Act, 206 and to form partnerships from other jurisdictions."
