Committee on children calls for stringent actions

The National Coordinating Committee on Children (NCCC) has condemned the recent crime committed against the 8- year-old child, who was sexually assaulted by a 21-year-old man.

This horrendous crime committed against the class three student must be condemned in the strongest terms says the NCCC chairperson and Permanent Secretary for Women, Social Welfare and Poverty Alleviation, Mr Govind Sami.

He said the National Coordinating Committee on Children condemns the inhuman and animalistic conduct of the perpetrator and believes such persons bring disrepute to our peace loving community.

“The committee expresses its heartfelt sympathies to the family of the victim,” Mr Sami said.

He said NCCC is concerned that this crime was committed in a school compound, an environment where thousands of parents feel safe to send their children everyday.

Mr Sami said the incident is alarming and calls for stringent actions to be taken from all authorities concerned.

He said the committee welcomes the Ministry of Education’s decision to review the security operations at schools.

"We welcome the Ministry of Education’s initiative to actually advice teachers to become more vigilant in respect of their duty of care towards children in the school premises and call upon all citizens to cooperate to eradicate violence against children,” he said.

The Committee reiterates its commitment to the CRC (Convention on the Rights of the Child) and will continue to work with UNICEF and all other child protection agencies to develop sound child protection policies for the emergence of a safer environment for children.
