More than 60 teachers will begin training to become Duke of Edinburgh Awards coordinators in the Western Division.

The teachers, from more than 30 schools, will undergo a one day training programme by the Department of Youth and Sports that will enable them to coordinate students undertaking the self development programme.

The training will include sessions on concepts and operating principles, roles and responsibilities, the award’s role in youth and national development will be held at the Waterfront Hotel in Lautoka.

The programme will also include a session on award project support and will be facilitated by the Vodafone ATH Fiji Foundation.

Department of Youth and Sports divisional youth officer west, Patrick Morgam said interest in the award programme had steadily increased over the last few years.

“Around 20 schools implemented the programme last year as part of the extracurricular activities offered to students,” Mr Morgam said.

“This year after our initial alerts on the programme, we have registered 62 participants from 34 schools in the division and we expect the number to increase.  It’s indicative of how attractive this programme is to secondary school students.”
