DECORUM EXPECTED OF PUBLIC OFFICE HOLDERS

05/05/2025

The Minister for Justice has confirmed that a video showing an altercation involving a member of the Fiji Corrections Services (FCS)  has been brought to his attention.

Preliminary investigations indicate that the footage is from an earlier date. “We have contacted the owners of the establishment, who have confirmed that the video likely dates back to early March 2025. While we are yet to determine the exact date, we have sought verification from the relevant parties,” said the Minister.

“This serves as a reminder to all public office holders and civil servants that a certain level of decorum is expected at all times—particularly when in uniform, whether that be Bula Friday wear or your official work attire. All officers are expected to behave responsibly during official hours and outside of official hours.”

The Minister is awaiting a full report from the concerned parties and is expected to provide an update to the Constitutional Offices Commission (COC) and the Honourable Prime Minister once verification is complete and further information becomes available. The Fiji Corrections Service (FCS) falls under the Ministerial assignment of the Minister for Justice, while the appointment of the Commissioner of Corrections is the responsibility of the COC, chaired by the Honourable Prime Minister.

The Minister has also reiterated to the Commissioner and staff of the FCS “that decorum is expected of all officers, especially when in uniform—whether it is Bula Friday wear or the official uniform of the Fiji Corrections Services. While social interaction is part of our way of life, I urge everyone to remain mindful of their conduct and to uphold discipline at all times.”
